A web proxy is basically a website that acts as an intermediate between you and the site you visit. You enter the address/URL of the site you want to visit in a text box, press the Submit/Go button and then the proxy asks for the site/page to the webserver where the site/page is located. This way the site you visit is not able to log your real IP address, but the IP of the proxy.

This method is very useful to unblock sites like MySpace, Facebook, Orkut, etc., in schools or at work where such sites are filtered.

There are plenty of proxies you can use. Just google “free web proxy“, “unblock myspace“,  “unblock facebook“, etc. and you’ll get what you need. 

2. Proxies

The second solution involves some manual configuration. You need to set up your browser to use a certain proxy. The configuration is not difficult. Here is how to do it for Firefox, IE, Chrome, and Safari:

Now, you need a proxy. There are a lot of sites that list fresh proxies, but finding a good one is a difficult task. Here are several sites where you can start looking:

• SamAir.ru
• Proxy4free.com
• ProxyList.net

3. VPN Services with PPTP protocol

The third option is to look for VPN services that use PPTP protocol, such that they do not require any software installation, just some Windows configuration (you may not have sufficient administrative rights to be able to do this). Here is how to configure Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Some VPN services that use the PPTP protocol are:

• HideMyAss
• ibVPN
• PureVPN

If this is your case, web proxies can save your day and let you access sites that are restricted by the school or company policy (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.). There are plenty of web proxies and places you can search for them, but finally, the best are those that are online for a longer time (more than 1-2 months).

How web proxies work

A web proxy acts as an intermediate between your computer and the site you are trying to visit. 

When your computer requests a Web page, it is retrieved by the proxy server and then sent to your computer. The effect of this action is that the computer hosting the Web page never comes into direct contact with anything on your home network, other than the proxy server. Thus, your public IP address cannot be seen by the site that you visit.

Pros & cons of browsing anonymously using web proxies

A proxy site is a website that allows you to connect to the internet without logging your IP address.  It acts as an intermediate between you and the site you want to visit. The sites you are connecting to will not see any requests or log entries from your IP address, but from the proxy server instead. Thus, you are able to surf in secrecy and change your IP address.

This can be especially useful when visiting sites while at work or school, or bypassing websites that only allow one account per computer.

• The IP addresses of web proxies are most of the time well-known and often blacklisted
• Streaming applications (like online radio or TV stations) are not supported. So you are not really able to watch YouTube videos
• Your personal information can be intercepted by the proxy owner (except for the https proxies)
• You are not able to choose the country or the location of the IP to be used
• Many proxies are full of ads, some of them being quite annoying (pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, etc)
• Most of the web proxies have a short life.

3 sites to find good web proxies

Web proxies are probably the simplest way to hide your IP address. Just enter the URL of the site you want to visit anonymously in the text box of the web proxy and press the Submit/Go button. Of course, there are downsides to this hide IP approach, but the idea is that it’s a solution that works.

There are plenty of web proxies available on the net, but where to find them? And more important, where to find good, working web proxies? Poor performance or slow download/upload speeds has been the biggest traditional complaint about using proxy servers.

Public Proxy Servers

PublicProxyServers is an independent, free service to allow you to find proxy servers for privacy and to circumvent browsing controls.

The site is excellent as it tracks the performance of each server on their free proxy list. You can access the proxies access time if you are looking for the fastest proxies. Want to appear that you’re coming from another country? Sort the list by country!

Centurian

Centurian is another site that offers much more than a free proxy list. The list can be sorted by the criteria of how new it is on the list, country, or script used to provide the proxy server. The speed of the proxy servers is shown graphically with a bar, that represents its score out of 10 for speed.

Hide-IP-Proxy is a blog that posts working web proxies. The main advantage is that you can subscribe by email to get fresh proxies everytime they are posted. Also, you can find proxies listed by country and by state (for the US).

Proxies from Thailand are quite rare. During my searches, I have found several such proxies, but only one that works: the one offered by Change IP Country (cIPC). You only need to select Thailand, enter the URL you want to visit and press GO.

2. Manually change your IP using paid or open proxies

An option is to find open proxies that are hosted on servers located in Thailand. You may find several such proxies here, on XRoxy.com.

But finding a good proxy is a difficult task. Most of them are slow and not reliable. And using a free proxy is a bad idea.

The good news comes from Digital Inspiration. They published a tutorial that shows you how to setup own free proxy server by using Google App Engine. Thus you will browse via proxy independent of your home network and without having to trust a sketchy third-party proxy.  Check out the video below:

Step 1: Go to Google App Engine and sign-in using your Google Account.

Step 2: Click the Create an Application button. If it’s your first time, Google will send a verification code via SMS to your mobile phone number. Type the code, and you’re all set to create apps with Google App Engine.

Step 3: Choose a sub-domain that for your proxy server. Then agree to the Google Terms and click Save. The sub-domain is also your App ID that will uniquely identify your proxy application.

Step 4. Next, you have to create and upload the proxy server application to Google App Engine. Go to python.org, download the 2.6.4 Windows Installer and install Python.

Step 5. Go to code.google.com, download the Google App Engine SDK for Python and install it.

Step 6. Download this zip file from Digital Inspiration and extract it to some folder on your desktop. The zip file contains a couple of text files (written in HTML and Python) that implements the proxy functions.

Step 7. Start the Google App Engine Launcher program from the desktop and set the right values under Edit –> Preferences.

Step 8. Click File –> Add Existing Application under the Google App Launcher program and browse to the directory that you created in Step 6. Click the Edit button and replace “YOUR_APP_ID” with the ID (sub-domain) that you set up in Step 3.

Step 9: Click Deploy and your online proxy server are now ready for use.
