What is Raspberry Pi?

As you probably know, the Raspberry Pi is a tiny computer that was built to promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries. Since its launch in 2015, it becomes very popular (more than 12M units sold so far) due to its cost (between $5 and $35), its simplicity and versatility. Raspberry Pi is now the preferred tool for hobbyists, students, and even hackers.

What can you do with a Raspberry Pi?

Well, you may use it in any project that involves a small computational unit. You may even use it as a desktop PC.

Are you new to Raspberry Pi? Here are two articles that may give you an idea of what to do next: MakeUseOf – Raspberry Pi Projects for Beginners and LifeHacker – Top 10 Raspberry PI Projects for Beginners.

What is RaspberryPI VPN and why would you need one?

If you are using your Raspberry PI as a desktop computer, then you may need VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to: secure your Internet connection, protect yourself from hackers or unblock restricted websites.

As expected, due to hardware and software restrictions, you may NOT use a Raspberry Pi VPN in the same way you use a VPN on a regular desktop or laptop.

How to configure the VPN on Raspberry Pi?

This article covers the way you set up a VPN connection on a RaspberryPI, not the way you install a VPN server on your Raspberry PI device. If you are interested in using your device as a VPN server here are some useful article:

How to install a PPTP VPN server on a Raspberry Pi

How to set up an L2TP/IPsec VPN with SoftEther VPN on a Raspberry Pi

Configure OpenVPN

This tutorial will show you how you can set up a VPN secure connection from your Raspberry PI using OpenVPN, assuming that you run Raspbian O/S on it. Before you begin, you need to get an OpenVPN config file from your VPN provider (if you don’t have a subscription yet, take a look at the bottom of the article).

STEP 1. Get your current package list updated:

sudo apt-get update

STEP 2. Install the OpenVPN package:

sudo apt-get install openvpn

STEP 3. Download the OpenVPN config files and then copy them to the pi (via scp or FTP), then unzip them into /etc/openvpn

sudo mv ####_linux.tar.gz /etc/openvpn

sudo tar -xf ####_linux.tar.gz

cd /etc/openvpn

STEP 4. Make the script executable

sudo chmod +x /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

STEP 5. Use the following command to get connected (replace config file – ovpn file – with one of the VPN server you want to connect to). Depending on the config files, you may be asked for the credentials (username/password).

sudo openvpn –daemon –cd /etc/openvpn –config openvpn_config_file.ovpn

STEP 6. To disconnect run:

killall -9 openvpn

Raspberry PI VPN providers

To set up a Raspberry PI VPN connection, you need an active subscription to a VPN service (if you don’t have a VPN server of your own). Most of the top VPN providers offer access to OpenVPN server configs that you may use with the above set of instructions. Some of them also expose batch files that can be quickly executed. Take a look below at the recommended VPN services to be used on your RaspberryPI and their RaspberryPI VPN tutorials.

VPN Provider

Raspberry PI Tutorial

Price

HideMyAss

Linux CLI OpenVPN Client

from $11.52/month

ibVPN

OpenVPN configuration for Raspberry PI / Configure the VPN for OpenELEC running on Raspberry Pi

from $4.95/month

NordVPN

OpenVPN on Raspberry PI

from $10.95/month

IPVanish

Set up IPVanish on Raspberry PI 3

from $10/month

PureVPN

Setup PureVPN on Raspberry Pi (PPTP)

from $9.95/month

ExpressVPN

After you set up the VPN, don’t forget to check your visible IP address on XMyIP or other IP locator website.

Conclusion

To sum up, you may set up a VPN connection on your Raspberry PI without much hassle. You may go either with OpenVPN step-by-step setup or use the following the tutorials of the above-listed VPN providers. Enjoy!

Do you need a lite solution for hiding your IP while browsing the Internet using the Chrome browser? A solution that does not interfere with other applications? And, would you like it to be free? Then, install a free VPN for Chrome extension in seconds and get your work done.

What is a VPN Chrome extension?

As you probably know, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a solution that encrypts the Internet traffic between your computer and a VPN server. Thus, your browsing data is secured, and your public IP address is hidden behind the VPN server. It is important to underline that a VPN app encrypts ALL your Internet traffic, for ALL applications, not only for your web browser.

Then, what is a VPN Chrome extension? Well, truth to be told, there is no such thing as a VPN web browser extension. For the simple reason that browsers can not set up VPN connections, only proxy connections. Proxies work similarly with VPNs, but they are less secure, and they can be configured application-based (you may set up a specific app to use a proxy and let others un-proxified).

To sum up, the extensions you may find in Google Web Store and that call themselves “VPN” are not using, in fact, VPN technology, but a proxy. Why do they use the VPN term? Probably because not many users know the differences between VPN and proxy, plus both can be used to hide your IP address. It’s only marketing

Free VPN for Chrome extensions

I have tested several Google Chrome extensions advertised as VPN, and that show up to the top of the search results. Read my findings below.

Hotspot Shield VPN Free Proxy

Hotspot Shield Chrome extension offers an elegant browser extension with a lot of extra, security and privacy-related options, like an ad blocker, tracker blocker, and cookies blocker. The default server selection is “Optimal,” but you may switch to manual and pick one of the following countries: Canada, Chile, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia, India, Germany, and Singapore.

The extension is very popular and used in millions of Google Chrome browsers, but don’t install it just yet. You should first be aware that AnchorFree, the company that runs Hotspot Shield, was recently accused of snooping on its users and selling data to an advertising company. True or not, you should use it cautiously.

Betternet Unlimited Free VPN Proxy

Betternet offers a basic, but friendly, user interface with no extra options besides connecting/disconnect and select from the two available server locations: the United States and the United Kingdom. It works smoothly and it can be activated with a single click. It may be a good free VPN for Chrome. However, the latest news shows that Betternet is not safe.

Hola – Unlimited Free VPN

Another very popular VPN extension (10+ million users) is Hola. It seems to be designed for unblocking certain websites (like Netflix) and not for general browsing. To be honest, I find the usage a little bit complicated and confusing. Too many messages and options. Plus, I see the pages that load from time to time quite annoying.

The same concerns as for Hotspot Shield: before installing the browser extension you should read the info regarding the rumors that Hola sold users’ bandwidth.

TouchVPN – Free Proxy to Unblock any sites

TouchVPN (a project associated with AnchorFree/Hotspot Shield) states that it uses proxy, not VPN. Thumb up!

The extension combines the site unblocking with hiding the IP address in a more straightforward interface than Hola. The available locations/servers are Canada, France, United States, Chile, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia, India, Germany, United Kindom, Singapore.

ibVPN – Best VPN & Proxy

ibVPN Chrome extension is an alternative to the more popular free VPN for Chrome extensions listed above. ibVPN has recently launched the so-called Guest Mode that allows you to enter without signup and connect to servers located in the United States, Netherlands, Germany, and Singapore.

A nice feature (also available in the free version) is the Bypass List (Whitelist) that allows you to select sites that are not using the proxies even if the ibVPN extension is activated. Also, it offers WebRTC leak protection. The extension automatically disconnects every 10 minutes, and manual re-connection is needed.

Which free VPN extensions for Chrome should you use?

It depends on what you need.

If you are concerned about your private data, I recommend using ibVPN.

If you need to access blocked sites (unblock Netflix or other online streaming channels), then you may try HotspotShield or Hola. Make sure you activate the VPN extensions only on the web browser you are using for unblocking the website, and you are not using the browser at the same time for accessing your PayPal account or performing any online shopping.

If you need to change your IP to multiple locations install HotspotShield, TouchVPN or subscribe to the premium ibVPN service (it offers 150+ locations).

You may have heard of the free network Tor operated by volunteers that masks users’ true locations and use from surveillance and web traffic analysis. In essence, they offer online anonymity to anyone who needs it. Learn how to unblock Tor network in China.

With Tor members may send an email and instant messages, surf the web, and post content online without anybody knowing who or where exactly they are located. Subsequently, it is greatly acknowledged as a crucial tool for bypassing internet restrictions and thereby supporting freedom of expression.

Apparently, this is a great worry for countries that practice authoritarianism and wanted full control and censorship. The notable and most powerful of these countries is China, and the government works with a firewall that shields their citizens from accessing blocked websites.

Not too long ago, Philipp Winter and Stefan Lindskog at Karlstad University situated in Sweden have found a remedy. They have devised a means to circumvent the so-called Great Firewall of China that blocks Tor.

How is Tor blocked

One seemingly obvious means for China to block access to Tor is by preventing access from within the country towards the entry relays. It is entirely easy as the entry relays are publicly listed, and thus, the firewall can effectively do this. Nonetheless, in expectation of the action, the Tor network will surely operate a couple of entry relays without publishing their details conspicuously to the public. Hence, it is made tougher to block and may easily be changed. The main issue is that the China firewall has found a means to find and effectively block these secret relays as well.

Recently, Winter and Lindskog found out a way to cloak the secret relays even further and unblock Tor. The trick is done by setting their very own secret relay and to attempt to connect to it from within China. Winter and Lindskog commented that the firewall utilizes deep pattern inspection to find the code in every outgoing communications or traffic. Once it locates it, it takes on a potential Tor connection. Thereafter, it attempts to make its very own connection. Once this occurs, the firewall will then block the future access to the IP address. Furthermore, they have devised means to deep packet inspection this.

Not contented, these guys even went to the extent of using Google’s reverse DNS lookup to track down who is working behind all the restrictions. The evidence pointed clearly to the direction of China: China Telecom and China Unicom.

So, how to unblock Tor network?

One good move is to use packet fragmentation. This is accomplished by dividing up the packets so as to deceive the deep packet inspection system. There is one great tool being developed, the so-called Obfsproxy. This will effectively mask the Tor traffic, which makes it look like something else like Skype traffic, for instance.

China is alarmed by the approach, so they actively blocked all published relays designed to make use of Obfsproxy. Nevertheless, the two wiz guys from Sweden have set up a private Obfsproxy relay in Sweden and have successfully connected to it from within China. It only goes to show that the deep packet inspection system cannot spot private Obfsproxy relays and therefore appears like a promising route onward. The sole reason that the China firewall is capable of detecting Tor Traffic is that it is easily distinguishable from other types of web traffic.

The subject of a great debate

Since Tor is an open and transparent organization, these talks about how to unblock Tor are undeniably occurring in public, and Chinese authorities know each and every plan of attack. The publication of the Winter and Lindskog’s white paper regarding their techniques are wide open to Chinese authorities’ full view and scrutiny.

These talks are highly susceptible of becoming blocked and forestalled by the Chinese authorities long before Tor’s people can even implement them.

We are one with Tor in this fight, free people from the shackles of Internet censorship, spread the word about this and support Tor all the way!

Using VPNs to ensure absolute anonymity while surfing the web has evolved to become a very common practice these days. There is no denying that there is a rising growth in the number of users utilizing it, and these figures will definitely escalate down the road.

Due to these demands, manufacturers of mobile devices like Apple Inc. have developed high-end iPhone apps that cater to these demands and enable folks to connect to the web safely and in anonymity. These iPhone apps are particularly designed to meet and secure the surfing needs of your iPhones.

The importance of iPhone VPN apps

Should you be utilizing a built-in VPN client within your iPhone, it is a very much favored alternative. Nonetheless, in case you are regularly using VPN, you definitely won’t prefer to spend a great chunk of your time adding in your login credentials on your iPhone if you want to browse the web thru VPNs.

In line with this, the developers made applications that can be easily used for your convenience. You may go on securely – use the web or transfer data via encrypted tunnels as much as you’d want. With a simple click of a button, you are connected, just be sure VPN has configured accordingly.

However, you may need to be aware that free VPNs may not be safe for usage. Take, for example, the Betternet safety issues.

Best features of iPhone VPN apps:

An easy one-click connection to the web.

Free you from time-consuming manual configurations.

Liberty to choose the protocol.

Makes the browsing data secured at all times.

Keeps intruders within your network at bay.

Safeguards your online privacy.

In today’s fast growing technological world it is common to have multiple devices in your home that use the Internet. Like, it is general for people to have Playstation, iPad and a laptop in their homes. In such cases you might use a router to connect all such device to your Internet connection but when you might end up using your paid VPN service on your laptop only! How many of you paid for double packages in order to use VPN on your laptop and on your iPad too? If you did then you surely have spent more than you should have. Learn about the VPN router.

What is a VPN router?

VPN Router is actually a normal router that has firmware that directly connects to VPN service helping all devices connected to that router to use that VPN service. This helps you pay for one VPN connection while all devices within the network use the VPN connection. Saves money, eh?

Although it is possible to flash (if it runs a variation of Linux) your usual router to become a VPN router, I will suggest you to avoid doing any such thing as it is quite complex and you might end up messing up your already running router.

Recently, a lot of companies have started to launch routers that are capable of connecting to VPN services directly without any hassles. This helps you route all your traffic within your network through the VPN server henceforth hiding your IP address for all the devices inside your network.

Main features

Basic features of such VPN routers:

Connect to any famous VPN service from around the Internet via the VPN router using VPN tunnel connections.

Serve the VPN connection to other VPN devices in your network.

Use wireless network for your network within your VPN router.

Have the freedom to configure everything yourself using the famous DD-WRT open source firmware or use the pre-built firmware for that specific VPN router.

In the weeks to come, I will review some of the famous VPN routers present around the planet so as to make your life easy. Then you will be able to choose from the best possible VPN routers.

What is a South Africa IP address?

A South Africa IP address is assigned to an ISP or hosting provider from South Africa. The most common such IPs have the following format:

41.0.0.0 to 41.31.255.255 (Vodacom)

41.112.0.0 to 41.127.255.255 (MTN SA)

105.0.0.0 to 105.15.255.255 (Teraco Ggsn)

105.208.0.0 to 105.223.255.255 (MTN SA)

197.64.0.0 to 197.79.255.255 (MTN Network Solutions Pty Ltd)

Are you interested in finding more info regarding the IP address ranges from South Africa? You may find such IP blocks here.

2 Ways to get a South Africa IP address

1. Use a VPN service

By far, the best option to change your IP address is to subscribe to a VPN service. Especially if you care about security or if you want to unblock streaming sites.

The VPN servers located in South Africa are less common than servers located in United States, United Kingdom or the Netherlands. Here are the VPN providers that I found and that provide South African IP address:

HideMyAss – Johannesburg (1 server)

ibVPN – Johannesburg (1 server) – You may access it through the Chrome, Firefox, Opera browser extensions as well. You may read our complete ibVPN review here.

PureVPN – Gauteng (2 servers)

NordVPN – 4 servers in South Africa.

If you know other South African VPN, please share them in the comments. Also, you may check the following list of active VPN promotions.

Are you not happy with the VPN speed? Learn about the things that may impact your VPN connection.

2. Use web proxies

A free method to get South African IP addresses while browsing the Internet is by using web proxies (HTTP proxies). They are a handy solution, but it is not suitable for online streaming as they are usually too slow and unreliable. To use such a web proxy simply visit the proxy site, type in the desired URL and press the Go or Submit button. Thus, the site is loaded from the IP of the proxy, not from your IP address.

One such a web proxy with IP address in South Africa is Teleport. If you know more feel free to share them in the comments below.

Before using a web proxy make sure you read: Risks of using proxy servers.

Conclusion

To sum up: there are options to get access to a South Africa IP address. You should go for a VPN service especially if you are interested in streaming or downloading, but you may also try the web proxy listed above. Also, you may decide to manually setup a proxy from this proxy list.

187.128.0.0 to 187.143.255.255

187.144.0.0 to 187.159.255.255

3 Ways to get a Mexican IP address

1. Use Web Proxies

The simplest and fastest method to browse using a Mexican IP address is by using a web proxy. Unfortunately, such proxies are usually too slow and unreliable for online streaming. To use such a web proxy simply visit the Mexican proxy site, type in the desired URL and press the Go or Submit button. Thus, the site is loaded from the IP of the proxy, not from your IP address.

One such a web proxy with a Mexican IP address is Teleport. Also, you may Google for “Mexico proxy servers”, “Mexican web proxy.” If you know more feel free to share them in the comments below.

Important! Before starting to use a web proxy, please read the following post: Risks of using a proxy site.

2. Manually change your IP using paid or open proxies

An alternative to web proxies is open or paid proxies. They are more stable and usually faster. But, you may need to pay attention to your privacy. DO NOT enter your credit card details or other sensitive info while browsing using open proxies.

You may find anonymous proxies with Mexican IP addresses on Free-Proxy.cz or Samair.ru. After you choose one, you need to set up your browser to use that anonymous proxy. Take for example 189.209.241.121:8081 and configure your browser to use it when you connect to the internet.

3. Use a VPN service

The third solution and the one that I recommend is by using a VPN service. They are the best option to securely get an IP address from a server located in Mexico. Moreover, such a service allows you to browse securely and privately as the connection is encrypted.

Here are the VPN providers that I found and that provide Mexican IP address:

HideMyAss – Guadalajara (1 server) and Sinaloa, Mazatlan (1 server)

ibVPN – Mexico City (1 server in Mexico) – ibVPN also offers access to browser extensions. Read our complete ibVPN review here.

PureVPN – Jalisco (6 Mexican VPN servers)

NordVPN – Mexico City (1 server)

ExpressVPN – Mexico City (1 server)

If you know others, please share them in the comments. Also, you may check the following list of active VPN promotions.

Summary

To sum up, there are several options when you need to change your IP address to one from Mexico. The easiest one is by using web proxies or open proxies, but due to performance problems, I strongly recommend trying a VPN provider.

Would you like to watch the Brazilian Globo TV or Globo Sports TV from anywhere in the World? It is possible by getting access to a Brazilian IP address. Take a look below at the various options.

What is a Brazilian IP address?

A Brazilian IP address is an IP that is assigned to an ISP or hosting provider that provides Internet services in Brazil. The most common Brazilian IPs have the following format:

152.240.0.0 to 152.255.255.255

177.0.0.0 to 177.3.255.255

177.16.0.0 to 177.19.255.255

177.24.0.0 to 177.27.255.255

201.80.0.0 to 201.83.255.255

Are you interested in finding more info regarding the Brazil IP blocks? Check this post.

3 Ways to get a Brazilian IP address

1. Use a VPN service

The most convenient and secure way to get an IP from Brazil unblock restricted websites is by using a VPN service. Such a service allows you to browse securely and anonymously as the connection is encrypted.

As the Internet infrastructure in Brazil is not the best compared to other countries, the servers and bandwidth are quite expensive. Consequently, VPNs with Brazilian servers are not free. Also, you should expect lower connection speed than, let’s say, while connected to a US server.

My advice is to choose one of the following top VPN services that offer Brazilian IP addresses (Brazil VPN): NordVPN, HideMyAss VPN, ibVPN (read our complete ibVPN review), and PureVPN. If you know others, please share them in the comments.

Also, you may check the following list for active VPN promotions.

Are you not happy with the VPN speed? Learn about the things that may impact your VPN connection.

2. Manually change to IP address from Brazil using paid or open proxies

The second option: open or paid proxies. They are usually less stable and slower than VPNs. But, they are free!

Important! DO NOT enter your credit card details or other sensitive info while browsing using open proxies.

You may find proxies with Brazilian IP addresses on XRoxy. After you choose one, you need to set up your browser to use that proxy server. Take for example 187.94.99.197:1080 and configure your browser to use it when you connect to the internet.

Next, if you don’t know how to change your IP manually you should check these posts:

Google Chrome – How To Hide Your IP While Browsing Using Google Chrome

Microsoft Edge – How to Setup a Proxy for Microsoft Edge

Internet Explorer – How To Manually Hide Your IP Using Internet Explorer

Safari – How To Manually Mask Your IP Using Safari

3. Use web proxies

Another free method to get a Brazilian IP address while browsing the Internet is by using web proxies. They are a handy solution, but it is not suitable for online streaming as they are usually too slow and unreliable. To use such a web proxy server merely visit the proxy site, type in the desired URL and press the Go or Submit button. Thus, the site is loaded from the IP of the proxy, not from your IP address.

One such a web proxy with Brazil IP address is Teleport Brazil. If you know more feel free to share them in the comments below.

But, before using web proxies make sure you read: Risks of using a proxy site.

Brazilian channels that you can unblock

Finally, here is a list of all the Brazilian channels that you can watch live outside Brazil with a VPN or proxies:

Espn Brasil

Band Sports Brazil

Sports Tv1, Sport Tv2

Cartoon Network Brasil

Disney Junior Brazil

FX Brazil

Globo, Globo Sport TV

many more

To conclude, there are several options when you need to change your IP address to one from Brazil. I strongly recommend VPN services but you may also try web proxies or open proxies.

This is a follow-up of an article about testing a free VPN service. Learn about how I tried a free VPN connection.

Free VPN connection

So I configured my VPN connection as per the instructions here. Now I launch my VPN connection on my Windows 7 PC and get this:

Error connecting …

After connecting and verifying my credentials, Windows came out with this dialog box:

Surprise. Windows is complaining that it couldn’t verify the identity of the server. Notice that we don’t have a credential issue here (otherwise I expect I would have received a message similar to “wrong username or password”).

Since I’m a free user, I’m not supposed to have access to support, so I’m left with consulting any available documentation on freeusvpn.com. Let’s dig into it then, although I’m pretty sure most of the regular users would have abandoned at this stage, especially when they know that a VPN is supposed to secure a connection and that their computer is warning them that it couldn’t verify the authenticity of the remote server.

Use Google DNS to avoid hijacking

But anyway, I’ve decided to go to wherever I can for this case study, so let’s move to the troubleshooting section. This troubleshooting section strongly advises I use Google DNS services to avoid hijacking. Let’s do it then:

So now let’s connect again and see the results

Yeah, I am now connected.

Verify the IP address of the server

So let’s see if we actually have an IP address that is somewhere else than in my country. Let’s verify it on whatismyipaddress.com or xmyip.com.

Not bad. Here I’m supposed to be in New Jersey (while I am in Madagascar- thousand miles away from New Jersey- Bruce Springsteen’s home )

So I tried another IP geolocation (hostip.info) service who would confirm that IP address, and guess what: confusion

Ok, let’s get a piece of third advice. So I tested the IP address on whatismyip.com, and guess what? I am now in Utah in the US …

Cool, that’s a great and quick trip: New jersey-Moscow-Utah in few seconds

Hmmm, so am I Bruce Springsteen’s neighbor, or am I supposed to wander somewhere in Moscow?

Anyway, let’s try to do things I wouldn’t have been able to do if I used my Madagascar IP address. So I launched hulu.com, and … and …. And, yes hulu.com doesn’t restrict my access. So much for accessing a website.

Firefox generally provides a fairly good privacy protection package that you can use to control how and when you want your IP to be traced and tracked. Learn about Torpark.

For the hardcore hackers and crackers, this protection is just not enough. The use of Firefox add-ons is still susceptible to being tracked and traced by anyone or any web bot determined to get your location and other browser settings. One of the best ways to remain anonymous is to use an ever-changing or dynamic IP address. But how do you do that?

What is Torpark?

Enter the Tweaked Firefox version called Torpark. With the Torpark browser, your computer’s IP address changes every few minutes effectively making it difficult, if not impossible, to track you down.

Using Torpark

Download the free browser on any download site that has a version of the Torpark browser. This is a modified version of Firefox and can easily run off a USB memory stick. This makes it fairly easy to remain anonymous, especially on the move, if top anonymity is of utmost importance.

Use the interface provided to access a website. The interface is very similar to the Firefox browser and it should not be a problem for Firefox users to locate and configure preferences.

Note the IP address that appears on the lower right-hand corner featuring a special “Flush Tor” button. This is where you click to reset the IP address.

Click on the “Flush Tor” button and notice the new IP address that comes up. When the button is pressed, a random server connection is initiated and a new IP address is provided.

Use an IP address tracker to see the location of the new server address.

Torpark servers

Torpark servers, nicknamed “Tor” is a worldwide network of servers that transfer data in an obscure random fashion to one another before redirecting to the website. However, the data sent from the last Tor is usually un-encrypted. Thus, Torpark advises users not to send sensitive data like passwords and usernames over the browser unless a golden padlock is clearly visible on a website, which is a sign that the Website data is encrypted.

Torpark alternatives

Firefox extensions like FoxyProxy and PhProxy also enhance Firefox browser surfing anonymity. FoxyProxy allows you to automatically switch your Internet connection based on URL patterns across a number of proxy servers while Phproxy acts as a shield between you and the Internet by only logging your server’s IP address effectively giving you anonymity.

What do you think of Torpark? Do you use it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
