Astrill is a new VPN provider that is specially designed to bypass the Chinese Great Internet Firewall. It is different from others, because you really just download it, install it and run it, and it will work out of the box. NO need to set proxy manually or whatsoever.
Servers provided by Astrill are located in the United States and the United Kingdom. Thus, can be used to unblock many geo-restricted services such as Hulu or Pandora.

- You can enjoy privacy with an encrypted connection.
- View both HTTP and HTTPS (SSL) websites anonymously.

After you have filled in the signup page, you need to press the Download button in order to get the connection application. Before installing Astrill you need to close all the browsers. The rest of the process is just Next, Next …Finish.
Starting Astrill afterward you will need to log in using the email and password set up previously. Then it will display a small program window with Off and On buttons, a country selector, and links to settings and help.
The same window displays the download and upload speed of the service. After it is started you can browse the internet anonymously.
I have performed 2 small tests while browsing with it and the results were quite good. The download speed was 2.04Mbs and for upload 4.87Mbs.
The second test was that I tried to access and watch Hulu. It worked smoothly.
To sum up, Astrill is an excellent hide IP tool remarkable by its simplicity and effectiveness.
Have you tried it? What do you think of it?
Hi,
Under “Learn more” and “Security” it states “Your connection is protected with our very own encryption algorithm …”.
I’m a bit concerned about this. What do you think? Do you think it’s safe & secure? No details can be found about the encryption aglorithm they use.

Install failed. I tried multiple times and the code would not work.
Perhaps the limit of 150 has been passed. A popup stating such would be appreciated.
Sorry this one is off the list!

@ad_infinitum – I’m not sure how secure the connection is. I’ll ask Astrill team to offer more details about it and let you know.
@David Z. – There was a mistake from my side. I have entered the wrong link to the sign up page. It works now!
It works fine but it isn’t exactly as a VPN. I think that the detail “View both HTTP and HTTPS (SSL) websites anonymously” as a big importance…
It only works for browsing …
dunno if it works for software using HTTP or HTTPS but what I know is that, for example, doesn’t work with torrent so I guess it’s the same for skype / msn etc …
So, it is not at all a VPN so change the title “Astrill VPN”
@roms – You are right. They promote it as a VPN but in beta it works like a proxy.

launch a sniffer and you can have some infos ? SSL ? plain text ?
for me, this proxy works well… speed is very good but speed can decrease after beta oh! i knew this i knew this… not for this kind of
service but for a similar offer ^^
@willemijns – I’m still waiting an answer regarding the encryption issue from the Astrill team. I will let you know when I get it.
Hi,
Looks like there’s still no response on the encryption issue. Since launch day, it’s been just over a week – not a good sign.
@willemijns
If I have to launch a sniffer to find out it’s not, it kind of defeats the purpose of using the service in the first place, don’t you think?
I know it’s a beta, but the encryption is a key aspect in services like this.
Anyway, plenty more options.

@ad_infinitum – Unfortunately, you are right. Still no response to the encryption issue and this is indeed not a good sign.
I think that it’s the best VPN at the moment. Very easy to install, very easy to use. It does not disconnect without warning even when we block the connection with the firewall ! ( It is a problem with CyberGhost, it often fails the connection saying problem with your firewall options without any reason !). And the bandwidth is really fast. I also appreciated the price: it is quite reasonable at 29,99$ for a 6 months plan (5$ per month).
astrill is good. and i hope it can be working on nexus one phone soon.
